Goals of the projects

The goals of the projects have been:

  • to contribute to the development of the
meteo-marine numerical model (MIAO ->link), that describes simultaneously the atmospheric circulation, the oceanic circulation, the sea waves at air-sea interface, and the interactions betweeen this three components
  • to improve our understanding of the air sea-fluxes and the effect of the sea waves on the sea surface roughness in the Mediterranean Sea
  • to develop and test a pre-operative procedure for meteo-marine predictions in the Mediterranean Sea.
  • To develop a meteo-marine numerical model (M.I.A.O.), that describes simultaneously atmosphere circulation, sea circulation, sea waves at atmosphere-sea interface and interaction betweeen the three components, integrating the modelling activities of Italian institutes.

This project has carried out the parallel analysis of the evolution of sea and atmosphere in the Mediterranean region. The numerical simulations have simultaneously used models of the atmospheric circulation, of the air-sea interface and of the ocean circulation. The results have been compared to the available observations. The focus of the project has been the sensitivity of the model results to the fluxes of momentum, heat and fresh water at the air-sea interface and the assessment of the advantages of the coupling among models.

The MIAO model, part of which has been developed during the first year of this study, has been used for three numerical experiments: two case-studies of intense Mediterranean cyclones, and the simulation of the operational practice for the period from 11 to 30 November 1996.

The results of the project are discussed in the following papers:
