INFORMATION CIRCULAR No 1
This circular is being sent via e-mail to all the leaders and observers who were at the XXIX IPhO in Reykjavik and to those leaders who, though weren’t present there, took part in the International Physics Olympiads in 1997 and/or in 1996, and lastly to those people who have contacted us in the eventuality of their country participating in the IPhO.
INVITATIONS
The official invitation letters will be sent out by the Italian Educational
Board by the end of December. To this purpose and in order to ascertain the list
of the addresses to which we will send the subsequent circulars and the
information brochure for those who were not present in Reykjavik, we will kindly
ask you to collaborate with us by filling and sending as soon as possible the
enclosed form.
TRAVEL
We highly recommend you to organize your journey to Venice airport as soon as
possible. The accommodation for the Olympiad in Padua will not be available
before the 18th of July 1999. We will be pleased, however, to give
help to those delegations who wish to arrive in Padua in advance in order to
recover from the jet lag effects and visit the Veneto region at their leisure.
In our country in July there are many tourists, therefore, it will be necessary
to arrange reservations well in advance in case of any delegations arriving
prior to the starting date of the Olympiad.
The leaders of the delegations taking part in the XXX IPhO will have to make sure that all of the members of their team have the necessary medical and travel insurance. The organizers of the XXX IPhO cannot provide any insurance for the participating delegations.
FEE
Italy has decided to keep the fees the same as the ones required last year.
Visitors, who will be asked to pay a fee of 1,000 US$, are welcome to all the
official cerimonies, trips and leisure and cultural activities of the XXX IPhO;
they will not be allowed to take part in the International Jury, which is
reserved for the leaders and the observers only. Moreover, observers, who are
required to pay a fee of 1,100 US$, will receive all the official materials
which will be distributed in the course of the Olympiad.
At the IPhO in Italy 65 Countries are likely to be represented: being very proud
of this, we will make every possible effort to make sure that all the Countries
that have already asked to take part in the contest for the first time will be
able to.
The increase in the number of the Countries taking part in the IPhO has
unfortunately made the relative costs heavier and heavier for the Country
hosting the Olympiad and much more difficult to get the funds to cover the
expenses. For this reason the delegations are asked to make a voluntary
contribution of 500 US$ for each team leader and 400 US$ for each student: a
total contribution of 3,000 US$ for a whole delegation. We have worked out our
budget on the basis of the voluntary contributions paid by the delegations in
Reykjavik. This sum is only a fraction of the total budget, but it is absolutely
necessary to enable us to guarantee the project IPhO 1999 to take place.
COMPUTERS
For word processing needs, each delegation will have access to an IBM compatible
computer. Delegations which have special font needs are requested to e-mail the
fonts they wish to use to olifis@no.sctrade.it. The fonts must be
true type or bitmapped fonts for use on a DOS/Windows computer. We will have
also several printers available for connecting to laptop PC computers.
