Containers for gases or liquids made out of one piece and of capacity within 5 and 150 liters are normally called CYLINDERS.
As stated in art. 241 DPR 547/55 "the systems, the system parts, the equipments, the cylinders and the pipes subjected to pressure of liquids,
gases or steams, that are absolutely secluded or exempted from the application of safety rules foreseen by the law
and to special regulations concerned with the systems and the pressure containers, must
have the necessary requirements of resistance and fitness for the use they are meant for".
In particular cylinders must be tested and submitted to specific review. Test and review are at owner expenses (Supplier Firm).
This means that empty cylinders must be returned to the supplier firm, besides the supplier firm must be contacted whenever the validity of the review is expired, the test date is punched on the cylinder.
The buyer is responsible for the consequences that may derive if he doesn't arrange for the return of empties cylinders or if he uses expired cylinders.
Everybody must take care of cylinders until they are returned.
PRECAUTION FOR A SAFE HANDLING OF GAS CYLINDERS
A gas cylinder must be used only if its content is clearly identifiable.
The content is determined as follows:
· Coloring of the ogive (nose), in accordance with the coded color by the low.
· Gas commercial name,indelible writing, self-adhesive labels, transfer onto body of cylinders, or identity cards attached to the valve or to the protective cap (labeling);
· Valve output adapter, as the low in force;
· Types and characteristics of cylinders;
It is important therefore that the user does not cancel or make not legible writings,
does not remove labels, transfers, cards on to cylinders by the supplier for the identification of contained gas.
Gas cylinders must be stored in right places: must not be
exposed to direct sunbeams, nor kept near to heat rising or in any case in environments where the temperature may reach or
may be over 50 °C, cylinders must not be exposed to excessive humidity, nor to corrosive chemical agents.
It is forbidden to storage in the same place cylinders containing incompatible gas between them. It is necessary also to avoid the storage of cylinders in places where there are combustible or inflammable substance.
In the place of storage empty containers must be separated from those full, using proper wall signs to mark out the respective stores.
During the use or in the storage places cylinders must be hold vertically and assured at the walls or at any solid support in order to avoid the overturning, except when the cylinder shape gives stability.
It is forbidden to use horizontal or upside-down cylinders.
Once assured the cylinder, it is possible to remove the protection valve cap.
Cylinders valves must be always closed, except when the cylinder is in use.
The opening of cylinders valve must happen step by step and slowly.
Never use keys or other tools to open or close valves with crank.
When valves are hard to be turned on or are seized for corrosion or in case the valve or the connector are damaged, please contact the supplier for instructions and do not absolutely use the gas.
Before returning an empty cylinder, be sure that the valve is turned off properly, screw the probable blind plug on to valve pinpoint and replace the protection cap.
Leave always a light positive pressure inside the cylinder.
The user must not change, break open, plug the safety devices, nor in case of gas losses execute repairing on filled cylinders and on the valves.
Valves lubrification is not necessary. It is absolutely forbidden to use oil, grease or other lubricants on the cylinder valves that contain oxygen and other oxidant gases.
Before giving back an empty cylinder, be sure that the valve is closed properly, screw the blind plug on the valve gate and at
last replace the protection plug. It is advise to leave always a light positive pressure inside the container.
Cylinders must be used carefully avoiding violent impact between them or against other surfaces, falls or other mechanical
solicitations that could compromise the integrity and the resistance.
Do not use valves, shrouds and caps for lifting cylinders and do not
roll, drag or slip them on the floor. Their handling, also for short distances, must happen by a hand truck or other appropriate means of transport.
Do not use magnetic elevators or harness with rope or chains for lifting cylinders. Use suitable cradles, slings, clamps or other effective
means when lifting cylinders with a hoist or crane.
Gas cylinders should never be left nearby an electric circuit.
When a cylinder is used in connection with a welding machine, it must not lay on the floor.
This precaution prevents (stops) the cylinder from flaring up by the electric arc.
