Procedures
The Design Service and Electronics Workshop has as main purpose the development, test, trial and installation of the equipment necessary for the experiments in which the Padua Section is involved. It also satisfies some requests (also of an educational nature) coming from the various researchers working within the Physics Department. To pursue these aims, the Service involves workers with different operating profiles (OTP, CTP), employed by both INFN and the University of Padua. All the equipment is available to the members of the Service.
Loan / use of tools
The tools can be loaned, only in the context of institutional activities, to specialized personnel, not belonging to the Service, operating in the research groups. The loan is free: it is registered in a special database to allow traceability. Normally an instrument is lent for a few days, rarely weeks. In exceptional cases, discussed from time to time with the manager, for a month. Some of these, given their complexity, cannot be lent: they can however be used by external users, on a workbench specially equipped in the Laboratory. For safety reasons, the presence in the laboratory premises of external personnel, is allowed only in conjunction with the employees of the Service and under their accurate supervision.
PCB masters building
The Electornics Service usually designes all the printed circuits related to the INFN Division and the Department Projects. This must be previously agreed with the person in charge of the Service. The design files are sent to the companies that will build the Printed Circuit. Given the peculiarities of both design and execution, that our printed circuits often need, some companies have made themselves available to face new problems and even to modify their own equipment to obtain the required results. This allows us, in some cases, to adopt non-standard solutions in the design of our PCBs.
SMT Assembling
About SMT possibilities, the mounting is performed both for the works developed within the Service and on specific request from the outer personnel, to carry out works related to the experiments or to the teaching. In special cases, upon agreement with the manager, SMT assembly can be performed for other INFN sections or laboratories.
Small mechanical workshop
As in all construction activities, the use of small mechanical equipment is essential. On some circumstances it is necessary to drill panels or to cut small parts in order to fit boards, connectors, electro-mechanical actuators or else. For this purpose a small workshop is present within the laboratory. The access and the use of the supplied tools is allowed, for security reasons, exclusively the Service members.<br/>In case of medium-large complexity works, the Section is equipped with a large and very well equipped Mechanical Workshop where a specialized staff can accommodate specific requests.
